O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She made it into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges in her performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. They were stunned by the outcome and urged fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performances since then, never fell below the three top performers. Judge Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would win from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September Finals of 2005.
